Most CD-ROM/CD-RW/DVD now days supports Compact Disc Digital Audio (CDDA). There are some very old CD-ROM that doesn't support CDDA and some new ones. But the ones that don't support CDDA are very rare. The reason some driver doesn't support CDDA is that the will not support piracy copying of audio CD's. One CD-ROM manufacture has tried to add functions that will make CDDA extraction hard. I read in a magazine that one manufacture had added functions that added noise that only where heard when you copied a CD. But I later read that this function made it impossible to read the CD-ROM.
I wouldn't recommend you to use any of Sony's CD-ROM drives. Many of my users have had problems extracting files from these and they have tried a many different CD ripper programs. Sony is also one of the record companies that are gaining more and more monopoly in the music business. As a musician I don't like this.
